Location checklist: how to find your dream Cameron home

If you’re thinking of buying a new home, chances are you already have a pretty good idea what you want. From the number of bedrooms and bathrooms to the style and colour of your ideal kitchen, complete with gleaming worktops and mod-cons. That’s all important stuff. But perhaps the most important factor in choosing a home isn’t what it is, but where it is.

The right location turns a great home into a dream home.

“Your home is where you live, but your location is why you live there.”

Dream homes start with dream locations

Whenever we consider a new development, we start with our land team (we like to call them the ‘dream team’). Their job is to pinpoint the most highly sought-after locations. Places that offer the perfect balance of space, serenity, activity and fun.

So, straight from the experts, here are the top three things they insist on when deciding where we should build our famously fabulous new homes. And which you should insist on too when you’re making one of life’s biggest and most exciting decisions: where to live.

1. Attractive, mood-boosting surroundings

Rolling hills. Ancient woodland. Panoramic views. Green space. It’s well known that our surroundings enhance our sense of wellbeing – but why wait for the weekend to go in search of uplifting scenery when you can have it on your doorstep every day?

The counties of Derbyshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire offer some of the most beautiful peaks and dales in the UK, dotted with historic market towns and charming villages.

One of those villages is Hulland Ward, the location we’ve chosen for our collection of homes at Woodgate Point. This natural beauty spot offers stunning views across Derbyshire. And for anyone seeking a healthier, outdoorsy lifestyle, it’s got it all – from dog walking, hiking and horse riding in the surrounding hills, to cycling, fishing and watersports at nearby Carsington Water. Or just breathing it all in from the comfort of home.

2. Proximity to the amenities that matter

Living in the countryside doesn’t mean going without the convenience of shops, schools and leisure activities. Pick the right location and you’ll have access to everything you need and more.

Shopping and leisure

Look for settings with an abundance of facilities close at hand. It’s also worth considering how easy it is to get to neighbouring towns and cities, with their wider range of boutiques, supermarkets, restaurants and attractions.

Schools

Schools will be high on any parent’s wishlist, so they’re on ours too. You can use the government’s website to search for schools in any location and see their Ofsted rating.

With a choice of several primary schools, two selective state secondary schools, a large community comprehensive and independent schooling, Newport is a popular choice for growing families.

Transport

Don’t forget to check out road and rail connections to the bigger cities – vital for making travelling and commuting a breeze. Are there bus services? Where’s the nearest train station?

Woodgate Point, for example, is in the village of Hulland Ward, which has its own primary school (rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted), general store, pub, medical practice, mobile library and post office services.

It’s also just 4 miles from the historic market town of Ashbourne, and 10 miles from the bustling city of Derby. And there are excellent road and rail links to both nearby surroundings and attractions further afield.

3. A sense of community

We believe that the best homes aren’t built around a plan, but around people.

Recent times have reminded us just how important our neighbours are – the feeling of knowing there are people nearby who are looking out for each other. And even in more normal times, how lovely it is to be surrounded by families with kids the same age as yours and your own friends just a short walk away.

That’s why we choose locations that are home to an existing community.  Somewhere with local amenities, communal activities and a true neighbourly spirit.

With a diverse range of schools, high street shops, pubs and restaurants at your fingertips, Forton Gate puts you right in the middle of an active community.

This is a stunning new collection of three and four-bedroom homes, set on the edge of the town of Newport. A place where you can feel you belong from the day you move in.
